Matchbox Pee-Wee Herman with His Famous Scooter and Favorite Helmet (1988)
“I know you are, but what am I?” In the late 1980s, Pee-wee Herman became one of pop culture’s most delightfully eccentric personalities, with Paul Reubens bringing his childlike enthusiasm, quirky humor, and unmistakable laugh to Pee-wee’s Playhouse. Matchbox brought that wonderfully weird world to toy-store shelves in 1988 with Pee-Wee Herman with His Famous Scooter and Favorite Helmet, a poseable figure based on one of the character’s most recognizable possessions. The set included Pee-wee in his signature outfit, his familiar red scooter, and a miniature helmet, letting kids recreate his adventures from the show. The scooter was especially fitting given its place in Pee-wee’s larger pop-culture story, including the central role it played in Pee-wee’s Big Adventure. At roughly six inches tall, the figure fit right in with the era’s character-based action figures while offering something a little more offbeat than the usual superheroes and cartoon adventurers. Today, this Matchbox set is a wonderfully nostalgic piece of 1980s memorabilia, capturing the colorful, surreal spirit of Pee-wee’s Playhouse and the time when even a man riding a tiny scooter could become an unforgettable pop-culture icon.
